Sewer & Lagoon

The Town of Hermosa operates a municipal wastewater system that includes a collection network and lagoon treatment facility. This system is managed by certified operators and is regulated in coordination with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) to ensure safe and compliant wastewater treatment. Routine operations include system monitoring, maintenance of lift stations and lines, and oversight of the lagoon to maintain proper treatment levels and environmental standards.

As reflected in recent meeting discussions, the Town has been actively working with DANR and project partners to complete improvements to the lagoon system. This project is now nearing completion and is intended to bring the facility into full compliance while improving long-term reliability and performance. Ongoing coordination ensures that all regulatory requirements and project milestones are met.

The Town continues to monitor system conditions, address maintenance needs, and plan for future improvements. Updates on system status and the lagoon project are shared regularly at public meetings. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and reach out with any questions related to sewer service.

2026 Updates due to the retirement of Public Works Contractor, Chuck Ferguson

Following a recent transition in public works leadership after many years of service, we have been conducting a thorough review of system conditions and operations. This transition has provided an opportunity to identify maintenance needs, evaluate system performance, and prioritize improvements across key infrastructure, including lift stations and collection lines.

Recent assessments have identified areas where repairs, updates, and operational adjustments are needed to ensure the system is functioning as intended and meeting current standards. In some cases, conditions identified may reflect deferred maintenance or previously unknown issues that are now being addressed as part of this system-wide review. We are actively working with certified operators, contractors, and engineers to address these items, including lift station improvements, debris management in collection lines, and necessary equipment and control updates. These efforts are part of our commitment to maintaining dependable service and preventing future system issues.

At the lagoon facility, we continue to work closely with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) and project partners to complete required improvements. This project is nearing completion and is expected to bring the system into full compliance while improving overall treatment performance. We will continue monitoring system conditions, completing necessary repairs, and providing updates at public meetings as we move forward.
